On October 10, 2025, New York Law School, with support from the Wilf Impact Center for Public Interest Law’s Racial Justice Project and LSA’s 2026 Advance Grants Program, convened a one-day program to celebrate University of Maryland Professor Mark Graber’s new book, Punish Treason, Reward Loyalty: The Forgotten Goals of Constitutional Reform After the Civil War. The program was part of a lecture and symposia series developed by NYLS Professor Penny Andrews, who seeks to unite emerging and established law and society scholars to examine the existential challenges facing democracy and rule of law.
The event featured four panel discussions based on Graber’s book, which unveils new insights about Reconstruction, the Fourteenth Amendment, and constitutionalism. Panelists came from institutions all over the country, including Yale Law School, University of Toledo College of Law, University of Richmond School of Law, University of Texas at Austin School of Law, University of Tennessee Winston College of Law, University of Connecticut School of Law, and University of Wisconsin School of Law.
