The Podcast will Air on Thursday, July 22

AMHERST, Mass. –
LSA President Laura Beth Nielsen will be featured in renowned author & journalist Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History podcast on Thursday, July 22. The episode will be available and posted to the Pushkin website starting at 5 a.m. ET.

Professor Nielsen joins Gladwell in Episode 1 of a three-part series about Disney’s animated movie, “The Little Mermaid.” The conversation will focus on Professor Nielsen’s 2013 article (co-athored by Nehal A. Patel & Jacob Rosner), “Ahead of the Lawmen: Law and Morality in Disney Animated Films 1960–1998.”

Published in the Law, Culture and the Humanities journal by SAGE publishing, the article examines the relationship between law and morality in a selection of original fully-animated Disney films. The study analyzes these G-rated movies, which grossed $100 million or more and shaped the childhood of lawyers practicing today. The authors find that the predominant representation of the relationship between law and morality is that they are at odds, which raise provocative questions concerning the role of mass media and popular culture on children’s moral development and understanding of the role of law.
