HONG KONG 2027

On behalf of the Law and Society Association and our friends from law and society associations around the world, we are delighted to invite you to the 8th Global Meeting on Law & Society, to be held June 22–26, 2027 at The University of Hong Kong.
The Global Meeting is among the most distinctive gatherings in our field. Unlike our Annual Meeting, it brings together law and society scholars and associations from across the globe for a convening that is genuinely international in its scope, its participation, and its scholarly reach. Since 1991, the Global Meeting on Law & Society has convened every five years to bring our international community together to advance sociolegal scholarship across borders and intellectual traditions, fostering collaboration and exchange that our annual meetings cannot achieve alone. These gatherings have been shaped over the decades by the partnership and commitment of law and society associations around the world, including our partners the Research Committee on the Sociology of Law, the Canadian Law and Society Association, the Asian Law and Society Association, the Japanese Association of Sociology of Law, and the Socio-Legal Studies Association. For the first time in its history, the Global Meeting will be held in Asia, and we are thrilled to welcome the world’s law and society community to Hong Kong in 2027.
We are honored to welcome the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law as our host for this global meeting. HKU Faculty of Law is one of Asia’s leading centers for sociolegal inquiry, with world-renowned scholars doing innovative work across human rights, access to justice, and AI and intellectual property. HKU has a strong record of organizing major international events that bring together participants from around the world to discuss pressing legal and social issues. We are grateful for the hospitality of our colleagues there. Hong Kong itself is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with a rich and historically significant legal tradition, and an electric setting for the kind of serious, wide-ranging intellectual exchange that defines the Global Meeting.
The Global Meeting gives us the opportunity to do what our expanded community does best. We bring scholars together across borders, disciplines, and traditions to engage seriously with the role of law in social life. It is a chance to forge new friendships and collaborations, to encounter scholarship that challenges and expands our own, to confront the assumptions and blind spots that can narrow our thinking when we work only within familiar communities, and to situate our work in a manner that addresses local and global real-world challenges. Being in a room with brilliant colleagues from around the world has a way of opening our minds and pushing us beyond our own corners of the field. In partnership with other international associations and HKU, LSA is confident this convening will spark conversations, identify interventions, and establish connections that will shape the field for years to come.
Submissions are now open and we encourage scholars at all career stages, and from all regions of the world, to submit their work. We also recognize that not everyone in our global community will be able to join us in person. To ensure the broadest possible participation, we are organizing a day of virtual sessions for those who wish to engage with the meeting remotely.
Hong Kong awaits, and we cannot wait to see you there.
