Qian Liu

University of Calgary

Qian Liu is Assistant Professor of Law and Society in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary, Canada. Liu’s research interests include the place of law in everyday life, legal consciousness, the legal profession, dispute resolution, law and emotion, and law and family relations. She is the author of Leftover Women in China: Understanding Legal Consciousness through Intergenerational Relationships (University of California Press, 2025). Her research appears in Law & Society Review, Law & Social Inquiry, Journal of Law and Society, Law & Policy, and elsewhere. Liu is the recipient of the 2024 Asian Law and Society Association (ALSA) Distinguished Article Award and the 2019 ALSA Graduate Student Article Award.

As a first-generation immigrant from East Asia, she is committed to fostering a deeper understanding of the long-standing traditions and contributions of Asian law and society scholarship to sociolegal studies and beyond. Liu was elected by the ALSA’s international membership base to the Board of Trustees for the term of 2022-2023 and was subsequently re-elected for a second term. She was also appointed to the Editorial Board of the Asian Journal of Law & Society in 2023. Since 2023, she has chaired two graduate student article award committees (one for ALSA and one for the American Sociological Association’s Human Rights Section) and served on the ALSA Distinguished Article Award Committee of 2025.
