CRN11  Displaced Peoples

Organizers

Steven Bender, Veronica Fynn Bruey

The mission of CRN 11: Displaced Peoples is to examine contemporary discourse of internal displacement beyond “Third World” conflicts towards Western states’ responsibility to protect individuals against all forms of (forced and coerced) displacement. The philosophy behind forming CRN 11: Displaced Peoples lies in the coinage of the term used to describe it: i.e., “Displaced Peoples”. CRN 11 embodies the idea of internal displacement as a critical paradigm shift in examining the intersections of race, gender, class, power and privilege within the global polity of migrants versus immigrants, refugees versus internally displaced persons, citizens versus residents, and national versus foreign. In seeking to normalise the concept of displacement as an umbrella term common to all groups listed above, CRN 11 adopts an all-inclusive perspective of displacement as both an internal and an international form of movement to include all those compelled/coerced to leave their places of habitual abode due to natural disasters or man-made hazards. This population includes, but is not limited to, internally displaced peoples, migrants, Indigenous Peoples, unhoused peoples, mentally displaced persons, and refugees. CRN11 invites everyone interested in all displacement issues to network, contribute, and participate in our global initiative.  To subscribe, please visit: Displaced Peoples.
