HERBERT JACOB BOOK PRIZE

The Law and Society Association seeks nominations for the 2008 Herbert Jacob Book Prize, to be awarded for the most outstanding law and society book published in 2007.*  This is an annual award established in 1996 and named in honor of Herbert Jacob in 1997.  Herbert Jacob (1933-1996) was a creative, energetic scholar who took on a wide variety of questions and issues, and whose work is a major contribution to the field.

The competition is open to books published (copyright date) in the calendar year preceding the award year.  Books may be from all fields of, and approaches to, law and society scholarship (excluding only works of socio-legal history which are recognized by the Association’s Hurst Prize). The competition is equally open to work from all stages in the professional continuum, from first books by young scholars, to books that may be capstones to long careers.  Textbooks, case books, and edited collections are not eligible for consideration. The prize includes a plaque and recognition at the 2008 joint meetings of the Law and Society Association and Canadian Law and Society Association, to be held May 29-June 1, Montreal, Canada.

The Jacob Prize Committee includes Marc Galanter, chair (University of Wisconsin), Pamela Brandwein (University of Michigan), Elaine Draper (State University of California, Los Angeles), Richard Markovits (University of Texas, Austin), Ronen Shamir (Tel Aviv University), and Christopher Zorn (Pennsylvania State University).
