Membership Information

Membership in the Law and Society Association is by calendar year and includes all Association publications for the year, backfilled if necessary. Unless specified, applications received after October 1st are entered for the coming year. Membership renewals and Association elections take place in September/October of each year.

Among the benefits of membership are: a subscription to the Law & Society Review (including electronic access on publisher's site) and Newsletter (new issues distributed electronically); the opportunity to participate in the Annual Meeting at a reduced registration fee; access to a real-time Membership Directory; the right to vote for officers and trustees of the Association, and the opportunity to serve on governance committees.

Dues are based on annual income and increased annually by the addition of the previous year's U.S. cost-of-living index.

For 2012 (no change from 2011), dues (U.S. dollars) are:

$37 (income <$15,000)
$66 ($15,000-35,000)
$93 ($35,001-60,000)
$130 ($60,001-90,000)
$163 ($90,001-125,000
)
$196 (>$125,000)

SPECIAL CATEGORIES:

STUDENT MEMBERSHIP:
Students dues are $37. To be entitled to student membership one must be a full-time, matriculated student at an institution of higher education. Student membership cannot be claimed for more than five years. 

SPECIAL INTERNATIONAL MEMBERSHIP:
Scholars who reside in Low and Middle Income Economies (World Bank list, click here) may join the Association as Special International Members for $22. This membership entitles them to all the benefits of membership except a paper copy of the Law & Society Reviewin other words, the membership is solely electronic.


CONTRIBUTIONS - PRIZES and INITIATIVES:

The Association has several prizes and special initiatives for which contributions are sought. Prizes include the Harry J. Kalven Prize, J. Willard Hurst Prize, Herb Jacob Book Prize, the Stan Wheeler Mentorship Prize, the Article Prize, the International Prize, Student Prizes, the Dissertation Prize. All are described here. As special initiatives, LSA seeks contributions to establish a fund for Minority Fellowships and a fund to support travel of scholars from Low and Middle Income Economies to the Annual Meeting. Finally, general contributions to the Association are also welcome. All contributions are tax-deductible for U.S. Members.

To join or renew membership in the Law and Society Association,  use either the online User Services or the fax/mail form. Online membership applications are processed through a secure server. The fax/mail form page should be printed from your browser, completed, and faxed to 413-577-3194 (U.S.) or mailed to the Executive Offices of the Association (address on the form)
