This is to make possible a larger event for all students attending the conference. It will be scheduled during the "free" period on Friday afternoon, July 27th. The Graduate Student Activity (GSA) will require advanced registration and a modest fee ($5 U.S.). Information on GSA and student travel grants. SORRY, CAPACITY REACHED. NO NEW REGISTRATIONS FOR THE GSA CAN BE ACCEPTED.
Berlin: A special page for city events, food, culture, etc. during the conference has been prepared by the Local Organizing Committee. In addition, there are many internet sites with information on Berlin's history, culture, museums, transportation, and sights. Some helpful links: Map, Bus, Boat, and Walking Tours; Museums; and general city information Berlin Tourism Bureau and Berlin Information.
The media attention brought to Germany around the recent 2006 World Cup while showing the vibrancy and excitement of Berlin also included coverage raising concern about the potential for racial harassment there. An ad hoc meeting was called in Baltimore by President Feeley of several people knowledgeable about the city and region and those particularly concerned about this issue. There, Joachim Savelsberg was asked to assemble some information on context and personal safety that could be incorporated into the Call. His brief essay, "Race and Racism in Berlin Past and Present," provides that information plus an excellent list of URL references to memorial sites, history texts, and contemporary Jewish life in Berlin.
Letters of Invitation for Funding Purposes: Participants requiring a letter of invitation for the purpose of securing funding from their own institution or granting agency should contact Judy Rose in the LSA Executive Office.
Visas: Some individuals may require a Passport Visa for entry into Germany and the European Union. Please consult the requirements for your particular country. A list of country requirements can be found here. Requests for letters to support visa applications should submit a request form through this site.
This website will be updated throughout the fall and winter with additional information regarding accommodations, child care, transportation, and special events at the meeting. If you have questions in the meantime, contact the LSA Executive Office , tel. 1-413-545-4617; fax 1-413- 577-3194.
