The Law and Society Association looks forward to your participation at our annual meeting in Las Vegas, NV, June 2-5, 2005. We particularly welcome scholars, researchers, and students who have not previously attended one of our events. 

The following information may assist you in planning your participation.

Pre-Conference events:

Didactic Workshops: The Law & Society Association will offer two Didactic Workshops on Wednesday, June 1, 2005. The Workshops provide attendees with the opportunity to explore new topics or skills through a one-day, intensive seminar with an expert in that area.  The Workshops will run concurrently, so you may participate in only one. They will be held in the meeting hotel beginning at 9 a.m., breaking for lunch from noon to 1 p.m., and concluding by 2:30 p.m. The fee for each Workshop is $75 and includes lunch. To register for a Workshop, one must also register for the Annual Meeting. It is also necessary to submit a one-page description of a research project or interests that will be distributed in advance to the facilitator and other participants so that others will have will have some familiarity with each others’ area of research. This year’s workshops include (1) “Prisoners of War and Culture: Soldiers, Detainees, and U.S. Military Operations”, to be led by Elizabeth Hillman (law); and (2) “Introducing Institutional Ethnography” to be led by Dorothy E. Smith (sociology).  

Graduate Student Workshop: Admission to the GSW is by application and acceptance (deadline passed). The schedule will be distributed to attendees in advance of the meeting. The GSW begins on Tuesday afternoon (May 31st) and concludes in late afternoon on Wednesday.

Trustee Meeting: New Trustees Orientation Lunch will be at 12:30 - 1:45 on Wednesday, June 1st with the General Session for all Trustees beginning at 2:00 and ending at 8:30 pm.

Consortium for Undergraduate Law & Justice Programs has scheduled their annual meeting at the J.W. Marriott Resort on June 1st. See http://www.culjp.org/prog2005.htm for more information or contact Valerie Hans (302-831-8231).

Conference schedule: The general meetings run from Thursday, June 2, beginning at 8:15 am, through Sunday, June 5, concluding at 12:15 pm. Other events: the Graduate Student Workshop starts on Tuesday afternoon (May 31st) and ends late Wednesday afternoon. The Didactic Workshops (advanced registration required) and the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees are on Wednesday (June 1). The 2006 Program Committee will meet on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning (June 5-6).

Book Exhibit: Will be held in the Grand Ballroom, Thursday - Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday, 8:30 am to 3:00 pm (Book Exhibit closes on Saturday). Publishers interested in exhibiting should contact Lissa Ganter.

Conference accommodations:  The Conference will be held at the J.W. Marriott Resort in Las Vegas (20 minutes north of the city in Summerlin). Sleeping rooms have been blocked at the hotel at a special conference rate of $149 single/double, plus tax. You must say you are attending the Law and Society Association conference at the time of reservation to receive the conference rate. Also list any room requests or special needs at the time of reservation. You may reserve by phone, 800-297-5056 (from outside the USA or Canada dial 702 869-7777); by fax, 702-869-7701; or online at the J. W. Marriott website. At the first page of the reservation form, enter enter “LSALSAA” in the field for “Group Code.” DEADLINE FOR HOTEL RESERVATION AT THE CONFERENCE RATE is MAY 1, 2005. We encourage you to make your reservations early as the block may fill prior to the closing date.

Access and Disability Information (hotel): An accommodations questionnaire completed by the hotel and information on the local transportation options for persons with disabilities is available here. All meeting attendees who have a special need or disability for which they would like accommodation are encouraged to get in touch with Mary McClintock at the LSA office.

Room Share ("sleep cheap" plan): For those who would like to reduce the cost of accommodations at the J. W. Marriott Resort, but who do not have a roommate in mind, LSA will again set up a room sharing plan that will attempt to match individuals according to stated preferences. Under this system, a double room at the Marriott conference rate of $149 plus 9% tax (total $162.42 U.S. dollars) may be shared with one person at a cost per night each of $81.21. To participate, print and complete this form (.pdf) and send or fax it to LSA to be received by by April 12, 2005 (DO NOT make a separate reservation at the J. W. Marriott)

Child care: Unfortunately, we have recently been advised that Nevada law prohibits temporary group childcare as part of hotel meetings. Only individual in-room childcare is permitted. Conference registration:  All participants must register for the Conference. You may register online or print out a registration form for fax/postal mail. The registration fee varies by time of registration and membership status. Early registration (until April 12, 2005) is: $60 for students; $120 for members of LSA; $170 for non-members. Registration between April 13 and May 13 is $20 higher in each category, except student, which is $5 higher. Registration after May 13th must be ON-SITE at $160 member, $210 non-member, and $70 student. Refund Policy -- By written request only: until April 12th, 100%; between April 13th and May 14th, 50%; and after May 14th, 25%.  ONLY ONSITE REGISTRATION NOW AVAILABLE

U.S. VISA: Attendees who need a confirmation of participation letter to accompany their U.S. visa application should contact the LSA Executive Office as soon as possible.  

Special Events: The conference will include several special eventsamong them, a Happy Hour for early arrivals on Wednesday evening, the Welcome Reception for all attendees on Thursday evening, a reception co-sponsored by Diversity and Connections Committee on Friday, and the local reception on Saturday evening and the Annual Fred DuBow fun run will 6:00 am on Saturday. The Association Luncheon for presentation of awards and the President's Invitational Address will be held on Saturday, advance ticket purchase required. In addition, there is a special International Breakfast that requires advance ticket purchase:

International Breakfast: Thursday, June 2, 7:00-8:00 am, tickets $20 or $9 according to one’s country category (see list). The International Activities Committee sponsors the “International Breakfast” to increase interaction among US and non-US based scholars interested in sociolegal studies. This year’s discussion will be on ways that LSA can better serve its international members and stimulate international research. We will also take time to meet each other and widen our sphere of colleagues. SOLD OUT - NO MORE RESERVATIONS TAKEN - Labor History Tour: [Sessions 2121 and 2221 - Friday 8:30 am - 12:00]. The tour will go to Hoover (Boulder) Dam, the engineering marvel known as the eighth wonder of the world. The Dam has a rich labor history that includes organizing by several unions, links to major national strikes, and struggles by African-Americans within the labor movement. Local historian Michael Green will guide the group, recounting labor history and general history of Las Vegas. He will lead the group into the depths of the dam and through scenic Boulder City, originally a federal reservation built to house dam workers and today the only Nevada city without legal gambling. Michael Green is professor of history at the Community College of Southern Nevada, the author of several books and articles related to Nevada and American political history, and editor of the Nevada Historical Society Quarterly. Tickets are $20 and include transportation and park entry fee. They are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Note: tour is not wheelchair accessible.

Travel arrangements: For airline reservations participants should consult their local travel agents or make reservations from the web.

Ground Transportation: As the J. W. Marriott Resort is located at a substantial distance from the Las Vegas airport, those attendees interested and able to rent a car may wish to do so (use web-based resource sites, comparisons among agencies is advisable as rates vary widely). Taxis cost about $50 each way. 

LSA SHUTTLE - for those who wish to use a shuttle to/from the airport and resort, as no regular airport shuttle serves the J. W. Marriott, LSA has arranged a free shuttle service that will run Tuesday (10:00 am - 10:00 pm); Wednesday. Thursday, Friday (8:00 am - 10:00 pm), Saturday (6:00 am - 7:00 pm) Sunday (6:00 am - 3:00 pm). If you wish to register for the shuttle, you are asked to provide expected airline arrival and departure information when known. We will email you the schedule and details on where to board the shuttle once we have that information. The shuttle will only make stops at the airport and the resort.
